What a Mold Remediation Goodyear Call Taught Me About Rubber Materials

The Call That Started with a Mistake

Last March, I answered the phone expecting a pricing inquiry. Ten seconds in, the caller asked if we sold rubber materials. I get some version of that question regularly. It comes with the name.

Let me clear the air: we’re Goodyear the plastic sheet manufacturer, not Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Similar name, completely different world. We make PVC, PET, PETG, PS, and ABS sheet and roll goods, plus a range of custom colors and thicknesses. The guy on the phone was Kevin, a supervisor for a mold remediation crew. He told me he’d typed “mold remediation Goodyear” into a search bar because his crew was working in Goodyear, Arizona, and our company came up. Then he made the leap: Goodyear sounded like rubber.

I didn’t blame him. The disconnect was my company’s name, not his logic. So I asked him to tell me about the job.

Rubber Isn’t Wrong, but It Was Wrong Here

Kevin’s project was a pet boarding facility. The room in question was the quarantine area, where pet animals stayed while recovering from minor procedures. The crew had already cut away water-damaged drywall and exposed the studs. The inspector’s spec required a non-porous containment barrier that was clear enough for staff to see through and could handle repeated wipe-downs with a disinfectant. Kevin heard “non-porous barrier” and thought rubber matting.

In some ways, he was right to think heavy-duty. Rubber sheets are tough. They work as floor protection, impact mats, and vibration barriers. But this wasn’t a floor. It was a wall panel in a small room with pet animals in it. Some rubber formulations carry a noticeable smell, especially in warm, enclosed spaces. That smell might be harmless, but I wouldn’t want to explain it to the vet while they’re trying to keep stressed animals calm.

More importantly, Kevin didn’t need a rubber material. He needed a clear material. There’s no practical way to make a clear rubber sheet that meets that spec. So I asked him what the material had to do, instead of what it should be called.

That question is where most material decisions go sideways. Most buyers focus on the material family they already know and completely miss the actual performance requirements. The question everyone asks is “rubber or plastic?” The question they should ask is “will this survive the chemicals, the temperature, and the animals?”

We ended up talking about PETG. It’s a glycol-modified polyester sheet that gives you clarity, impact resistance, and a non-porous surface. It’s commonly used in food packaging, medical clamshell packaging, and point-of-purchase displays. For a quarantine room, it made more sense than rubber.

I sent Kevin a sample, a spec sheet, and a chemical resistance chart. He tested it with the exact disinfectant spray his crew was using. That test took fifteen minutes and saved both of us from a 24-sheet mistake. I’ve learned that trick the hard way: generic spec sheets hide a lot.

One more detail: I didn’t call the PETG “recyclable” in a blanket way. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims need to be truthful and specific to local recycling access. That’s a small detail, but it’s the same habit as checking the chemical chart before promising a material will work.

The Air Hose Question That Proved the Point

While we were loading the PETG sheets into his trailer, Kevin’s air compressor hose split at the coupling. He laughed and asked, “While I’m here, what’s the best air hose for air compressor?”

I gave him the same answer I’d just given him about sheets. There is no universal best air hose for air compressor use. A hose that lives in a hot truck bed all year needs different properties than a hose dragged through drain duct and wrapped around sharp edges. Some compressor hoses are rubber. Some are hybrid PVC. Some have textile braid, some have wire braid. The material has to match the abuse it will actually see.

Kevin’s hose snapped because it had been sitting in the sun and the outer layer had cracked. A rubber hose might have lasted longer in that one spot, but a lighter hybrid hose might have been easier to handle in tight spaces. Best isn’t a product spec. Best is a fit.

That conversation made me think about how many orders we get based on a material name instead of an application. Rubber materials will always have a place in this industry. So will PVC, PET, PETG, ABS, and PS. The material isn’t the starting point. The problem is.

What I Learned

Kevin’s mold remediation Goodyear job still comes up when I train new people. It wasn’t a huge order, and it didn’t require a special production run. But it was a perfect example of how to turn a wrong assumption into a better outcome.

First, I learned to ask “what does it need to do?” before asking “what do you want it to be?” That sounds like basic advice, but under deadline pressure, it’s the first question people skip.

Second, I learned that being honest about materials is good business. I could have tried to sell Kevin a rubber material just because he used the word rubber. That would have been the wrong call. If I had said “sure, rubber works,” he would have gotten a containment barrier that didn’t meet the inspector’s requirements. The project would have stopped, and the boarding facility would have lost another day. That isn’t the kind of reputation I want.

Third, I learned that the industry has changed in ways that make these conversations easier. What used to be “rubber is the heavy-duty option and plastic is for packaging” doesn’t apply anymore. The fundamentals haven’t changed—you still need a material that matches the environment and the cleaning chemicals—but the execution has. Today’s PETG and PET sheets are engineered for uses that old product lines couldn’t handle.

I say all this as someone who has made the wrong call. In 2019, I quoted a customer for ABS sheeting without asking what performance rating they needed. The order passed the check, but it failed the oven test. $2,300 of material went nowhere. That mistake is why I now make our team ask for the performance specs first. It’s also why I had the confidence to push back on Kevin when he asked for rubber.

Looking back, I should have asked Kevin about his air compressor earlier. Not because it made the sale, but because the same material logic applied. If I had listed the requirements for both his sheets and his hose, he would have seen the pattern faster.

If you’re ever in a similar spot, don’t start with the category. Start with the problem. The right material usually follows.
