PET vs Polypropylene: A Buyer's Honest Comparison for Plastic Sheet and Roll

The frame I use for any material comparison is simple: price, physical behavior, and fit for the application. I don't care about the chemistry if the sheet cracks during fabrication.

Impact and flex: why stiffness matters

PET is stiff, strong, and has good clarity. It also handles impact better than PP in most sheet applications. If you need a display panel that won't dent, PET is your material. PP, by contrast, is softer. It bends without breaking—which makes it a no-brainer for hinges or parts that flex repeatedly.

Here's the part that surprised me: PP's flexibility can be a weakness in flat sheets. If the sheet is unsupported and thin, PP can sag or flap. PET holds its shape. I once assumed the stiffer, more expensive material would be more brittle. It isn't—at least not in the gauges we buy.
