"Rubber" Is Not a Material Spec — a Goodyear Manufacturer's Confession

Here's my opinion: "rubber" is the most expensive word in B2B materials procurement. Not because rubber is a bad material — it isn't. But because most of the time, when someone writes "rubber" on a spec sheet, they're actually buying something that only resembles rubber.

I've been handling material orders at a plastic sheet manufacturer — the kind of factory that makes PVC rolls, PETG sheets, ABS boards, and other flexible plastic goods — for about eight years. In that time, I've personally made and documented over 30 significant procurement mistakes. Total waste? Roughly $47,000 in redo work, rush shipping, and scrapped material. Not one of those mistakes came from a supplier who "didn't care." Almost all of them traced back to vague words on a purchase order. The vaguest of them all? "Rubber."

The Goodyear Air Hose Call That Started It

Around October 2022 — I'm pretty sure it was October — a buyer emailed us asking for a quote on "Goodyear air hose."

We don't make air hoses. Our factory produces PVC sheets and rolls, PETG sheets, ABS boards, reusable blister pack film, binding covers, that kind of thing. But because our company name is Goodyear, the buyer had searched "Goodyear air hose," found our website, and assumed we were part of the rubber hose world.

One polite email and a phone call cleared that one up. No money lost. But it got me thinking about how confidently B2B buyers lean on brand names they don't fully understand. Search "Goodyear brands" sometime. You'll get a tire giant. An air hose manufacturer. A blimp. And, buried somewhere, a plastic sheet company in the B2B wholesale space. Same name. Completely different materials.

That confidence — "I know what this name means, so I don't need to check" — shows up in material wording too.

The $890 "Adhesive Rubber Strips" Disaster

Here's the story that actually changed my process.

Early last year (2023), a packaging company ordered 300 pieces of "adhesive rubber strips." The total came to about $3,200. And the material spec on their P.O. was, and I quote:

"Rubber strips, adhesive-backed, black. Flexible. You know what rubber is."

That was it. No thickness. No durometer. No temperature rating. No chemical compatibility requirements.

We make flexible PVC and PETG strips that customers commonly describe as "rubber-like." So we sent samples in both materials. They approved the samples, placed the order, and we produced it.

Then came the rejection: "This isn't rubber. It doesn't feel like rubber."

The customer was right. It was PVC, not rubber. But their P.O. said "rubber," and we — being the supplier — had taken a vague word and guessed. That $3,200 order cost us $890 in redo work and one week of production delay. We also lost a chunk of credibility with a customer we genuinely wanted to serve.

After that, I opened a folder on my desktop named "spec horror stories." The first file was theirs. And I built a checklist so I'd never need a second one.

Nitrile vs Rubber Gloves: Same Word, Different Material

If you think the rubber strips confusion is rare, talk to any procurement person about "nitrile vs rubber gloves."

People use the terms interchangeably in everyday conversation. In industrial purchasing, they're not interchangeable:

  • Natural rubber (latex) gloves stretch well, tear less easily, but degrade around oils and solvents. They also carry latex proteins, which can trigger allergies.
  • Nitrile gloves are synthetic. Better chemical resistance, better puncture resistance, no latex proteins. But generally higher cost.

Both get called "rubber gloves." Neither is "just rubber."

This isn't a niche problem. I've seen it in food processing plants, pharmaceutical packaging lines, and electronics assembly facilities. Someone writes "rubber gloves" on an MRO order, and the warehouse team buys the cheapest latex option. If anyone on the line has a latex sensitivity, that's not a budget problem anymore. It's a safety problem.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims need to be truthful and substantiated. But a purchase order is not an advertisement. Nobody is looking at your P.O. and asking, "Wait, does the buyer know they wrote latex instead of nitrile?" The burden is entirely on the buyer. (Note to self: this is why "keep language vague" and "keep costs low" are mutually exclusive on every P.O.)

What "Rubber" Actually Means (and What It Doesn't)

Let's get technical for roughly 30 seconds.

Real rubber is an elastomer. Natural rubber comes from latex. Synthetic rubbers — nitrile, EPDM, neoprene, silicone — are petroleum-based polymers. They stretch significantly and return to their original shape. They also handle heat, oil, weather, and chemicals very differently from each other.

Flexible plastics like PVC, PETG, and ABS are sometimes described as "rubber-like." They bend. They flex. They can even feel rubbery to the touch. But they are not elastomers. They're thermoplastics. Different chemical family, different manufacturing process (plastic sheet extrusion vs. rubber molding), different cost structure, different life span.

"Rubber molding" is another case where words get sloppy. Some molders work with true elastomers. Others do plastic injection molding and describe it as rubber molding because the finished part is flexible. A part designed for a rubber molding process will not survive being made from the wrong thermoplastic. And vice versa.

None of this is secret knowledge. It's just rarely explained to the person writing the P.O.

The Checklist I Now Use for Any Order With "Rubber" in It

I keep a printed checklist above my desk. Every sales rep in our company uses it. It looks like this:

  1. Exact material chemistry. Not "rubber." Is it natural rubber, nitrile, EPDM, neoprene, silicone, PVC, PETG, ABS, TPE? Name the polymer.
  2. A physical property. Shore durometer, flexibility range, or a specific performance test the final product must pass.
  3. Operating environment. Temperature range. Chemical contact. UV exposure. Outdoor or indoor use.
  4. Adhesive spec (if any). Peel strength, temperature resistance, acrylic-based vs. rubber-based adhesive.
  5. Thickness tolerance and finish. Matte, glossy, textured, embossed — say it explicitly.
  6. A drawing or a photo. If you don't have one, find one. More misunderstandings come from missing drawings than missing materials. (I really should write a separate post about that.)
  7. End-use question. What is this part, strip, or sheet actually going to do? Because the end-use always exposes the gaps.

We've caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months. Every single one had one thing in common: the customer's original P.O. contained a word that could mean three different materials.

But Sometimes "Rubber" Is the Right Word

Before you think I'm declaring war on the word: no, I'm not.

I can only speak to my own context — custom plastic sheets, rolls, strips, and films for packaging and manufacturing, not actual rubber goods. If you've been ordering true rubber parts from a genuine rubber supplier for years and your specs work, don't change a thing. Your situation is different from the packaging company in my story.

But if you're sourcing "flexible material" from a supplier you haven't worked with before, and the only description on the P.O. is "rubber" — that's a gamble. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you get a $3,200 order sitting in the warehouse that nobody can use.

The bottom line: "rubber" is a category, not a specification. "Goodyear" is a brand that can mean a tire, an air hose, or a plastic sheet. The most expensive words in industrial purchasing are the ones that sound specific but aren't.

Write the exact polymer. Include the hard numbers. Tell your supplier what the product has to survive. It takes ten extra minutes on the P.O. and it saves weeks of rework, refunds, and awkward phone calls.

And if you catch yourself typing "rubber" into a spec sheet and stopping there... just remember that at least one manufacturer out there is bracing for your call.
