Goodyear Plastic Sheets: 8 Questions We Actually Get

I'm a quality inspector at Goodyear Plastic Sheets. Every day I check PVC, PET, PETG, PS, and ABS sheets before they ship—roughly 200 different products a year. In Q1 2024, about 2.3% of first runs missed the color or thickness tolerance. So I have strong opinions about specs. These are the questions I keep answering.

1. Are you the Goodyear tire company?

No. That's the first thing I say to callers. We're Goodyear as in plastic sheet and roll manufacturer—not The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. If you landed here looking for a goodyear store for tires, this isn't it.

And no, we don't make or sell the Goodyear logo. That logo is a registered trademark of the tire company. What we do is help customers put their own logo on PVC, PET, PETG, PS, or ABS sheets for packaging, binders, displays, and blisters. A lot of B2B buyers search for 'Goodyear' and end up here, so I'd rather clear that up fast.

2. Do you do rubber processing?

Honestly, no. Rubber processing is a different field: mixing rubber compounds, milling, vulcanizing, and working with cross-linked materials. We don't do that. We extrude and calender thermoplastics like PVC, PET, PETG, PS, and ABS into sheets and rolls.

It's tempting to think that any material supplier can handle rubber and plastic. But the equipment is different, and the material behavior is different. Rubber can be vulcanized and won't simply remelt. Thermoplastics can be reheated and reshaped. I'd rather tell you this isn't our strength before you spend a week waiting for a quote. The supplier who says 'this isn't our strength—here's who does it better' earns trust for the things they do well.

3. Is polyurethane plastic or rubber?

That's a common question, and the shortcut answer—it's a rubber or it's a plastic—is wrong. Polyurethane is a polymer family. Some types behave like flexible rubber; others behave like rigid plastic. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) can be processed like a plastic, while thermoset polyurethane behaves more like a rubber.

If you're choosing a material, don't start with plastic vs rubber. Start with hardness, flexibility, chemical resistance, thickness, and how the part will be made. For clear sheet applications, our usual recommendation is PETG or PVC, not polyurethane, because they're easier to thermoform and often cost less. But that's a judgment call. A TPU film might be the right choice if you need high abrasion resistance and elasticity.

4. What does PET sheet have to do with a pet pigeon?

I want to say one customer used PET sheet to build a custom travel cage for a pet pigeon—but don't quote me on that. What I can tell you is that PET and PETG sheets get used for animal enclosures, clear packaging, and display boxes because they're clear, tough, and work well with thermoforming.

If you're building a pet enclosure, I'm not the animal expert—I'm the material quality guy. You'd need to think about thickness, safe edges, ventilation, and cleaning. We can supply PET or PETG sheet in a range of sizes and thicknesses, but you'd be the one designing the housing. That's the honest answer. When someone asks for a material for a specific critter, I can only speak to the plastic part.

5. How do I make sure the color matches my logo?

This is where I sound like a broken record. Give me a Pantone number. The Pantone Color Matching System guidelines put brand-critical color tolerance at Delta E below 2. Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. If you send 'just make it blue,' you might get a blue—but maybe not your blue.

In Q4 2024, a customer showed me a blue sample they'd received from another supplier. It passed the look-fast test, but measured against their Pantone reference it was off by Delta E 3.2. They had almost approved it. We matched the color at Delta E 1.1 on our first trial. Now I make it a habit to ask for a physical sample before any full production run, especially for branded packaging.

6. Should I just order the thickest sheet to be safe?

Probably not. Thicker isn't automatically better. It costs more—or rather, it costs more upfront, and it can cost more in fabrication if it's too rigid. What matters is the right thickness for the job, plus the tolerance around it.

In my first year of reviewing specs, I made the classic specification error: assumed 'standard' meant the same thing to every vendor. It cost us a $600 rework. A sheet labeled 1.0 mm might come in at 0.95 mm or 1.05 mm, depending on the manufacturer's tolerance. If your product needs tight tolerance, you have to say it in writing.

There's also the cheap-shortcut version. One customer saved $80 by going thinner than spec, then paid $400 for a rush replacement when the sheets warped in storage. That's the saved-a-little, spent-a-lot equation. It's not always wrong to go thinner, but do it on purpose, not just to save a few dollars.

7. What resolution does my logo file need to be for printed sheets?

If we're printing on the sheet—say, a display board or blister card—the standard minimum is 300 DPI at final size. Large-format posters can get away with 150 DPI because they're viewed from farther away. If your logo is 800 pixels wide and you need it 10 inches wide, that's 80 DPI. It'll look pretty soft.

Vector files are best. If all you have is a JPG, send the biggest file you have. Online printers work fine for standard business cards, but a custom printed plastic sheet usually needs a manufacturer who controls both the sheet and the printing. That way, the color, thickness, and print surface can be tested together before a full run.

8. Can you make custom sizes and colors?

Yes. Custom color matching and custom thickness are a big part of what we do. Give us a target thickness, a Pantone reference if you have one, and a realistic quantity. From there we can tell you what's possible and what's not.

Lead time depends on the material and the color. I want to say standard custom color runs are usually 7 to 15 working days, but don't quote me on that—schedules shift with machine load and material availability. If you're comparing suppliers, pay attention to the whole cost: base price, setup, shipping, and reprint risk. The lowest quoted price often isn't the lowest total cost.
