PVC vs PET vs PETG vs ABS vs PS: A Cost-Focused Buying Guide for Plastic Sheet Sourcing

If you were actually looking for a pneumatic air hose or the best hydraulic hose manufacturers, I'll save you some time: this is a plastics factory page, not a hose page. But if you're trying to buy rigid sheet for packaging, printing, signage, or fabrication, keep reading. There is no single 'best' plastic sheet. There is only the best option for your particular situation.

I've spent the last seven years as a procurement manager for a mid-sized packaging company, managing a materials budget of roughly $1.2 million a year. I've negotiated with more than 30 sheet and film vendors, and I've built a TCO (total cost of ownership) spreadsheet after getting burned on hidden fees twice. The first thing I tell anyone who asks about PVC vs PET vs PETG is: stop comparing materials. Start comparing what they need to do. The decision branches from there.

Step 1: Identify your scenario before choosing a material

Every purchase starts with three questions.

  1. What will the sheet touch? Food, chemicals, outdoor sunlight, or people?
  2. What will you do to it? Thermoforming, printing, die-cutting, routing, bending, or gluing?
  3. How many parts do you need? A prototype, a seasonal run, or year-round production?

Your answers put you in one of four scenarios. Scenario A is packaging, Scenario B is custom appearance, Scenario C is fabrication, and Scenario D is order size. Each has a different cost logic.

Scenario A: Blister packs, clamshells, and food-grade trays

Best choices: PET, PETG, or PVC—depending on food contact and thermoforming needs.

Here's where the first mistake usually happens. Someone does a PET search and assumes 'PET' is automatically better than PVC. It can be, but the exact grade matters more than the resin family. A 20-mil PETG roll without proper anti-stat treatment can jam a high-speed packaging line. A cheaper PVC can work perfectly for a non-food clamshell.

I've made the mistake of assuming 'same specifications' meant identical performance across vendors. It didn't. Two suppliers can call a sheet '20 mil' but with different tolerances and surface treatments. Don't say 'they're the same' until you've tested both.

In Q4 2024, we compared quotes for identical 20-mil sheet dimensions. The PVC quote was about 15% lower than PETG (based on our vendor quotes, not a published price list). Don't hold me to the exact number—prices move—but the gap was real. That sounds like a win until you calculate total cost. If the product needs to hold food, PET is usually the safer compliance route. PETG is easier to thermoform and has better chemical resistance in some cases, but it costs more. And PVC is fine if no food contact is involved.

If you say 'food contact,' don't mean 'we hope it's food contact.' Ask for the compliance certificate. Verify it. Keep it on file. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.

Scenario B: Custom colors, textured finishes, and exact thickness

Best choices: PVC, ABS, PS, or PETG depending on gloss, rigidity, and finishing.

This is where factory-direct matters. Goodyear (the plastic sheet manufacturer, not the tire brand) can make custom colors and thicknesses in production lots. But color matching is not as simple as sending a Pantone code. It involves resin, pigment, UV additives, and surface texture. A glossy vs matte finish can look like a completely different color under the same light.

I made a communication error in my second year. I told a supplier, 'make it the same as the sample but a little more matte.' They heard, 'same coating, less gloss.' When the first pallet arrived, the finish was different from what I expected. We were using the same words but meaning different things. Now I never approve a custom color without a physical sample and a written surface-gloss standard. (A physical sample costs about $50. A wrong pallet costs thousands.)

For custom work, ask the supplier for:

  • A physical sample, not a PDF screen shot.
  • Thickness tolerance in writing, e.g. +/- 0.005' or +/- 0.01'.
  • The minimum order quantity for that exact color.
  • Whether color is matched per batch or once at the start of the order.

Notice all of those are prevention steps. The 12-point checklist I created after that incident has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. It's not exciting, but it works.

Scenario C: Signage, enclosures, and industrial fabrication

Best choices: ABS if you need impact resistance, PVC foam board if weight matters, PS if cost is the only priority and failure risk is acceptable.

If you're routing, sawing, drilling, printing, or painting the sheet, the material's machinability can be more important than its raw cost. ABS is forgiving. PVC sheet is stiff but can chip if you use the wrong blade. PS is cheap and easy to print, but it cracks.

I once compared a $2.10 PS sheet with a $3.40 ABS sheet (same dimensions, from two vendors, in Q3 2024). The PS looked like the obvious bargain. But our workshop scrap rate was 12% with PS due to cracking and edge chipping. With ABS, scrap was under 1%. After adding labor, machine time, and disposal, ABS was actually cheaper per finished part. Unit price told the wrong story. TCO told the right one.

Scenario D: Very large rolls or very small trials

If you need high volume, buying direct from a factory—like our Goodyear facility—makes sense. You can reserve production slots, lock in pricing, and arrange scheduled deliveries. If you need a small trial, a local distributor may be faster, even if the unit price is higher. Don't confuse a lower unit price with a lower total cost.

I've been tempted more than once to order a truckload to grab a volume discount. The upside of one deal was $2,000 in savings. The risk was locking in 10,000 sheets of a material we hadn't fully tested on our line. I kept asking myself: is $2,000 worth potentially writing off 10,000 sheets? It wasn't. We ordered a third of the volume, ran the trial, and only then committed to full volume. Not the most exciting procurement story, but it saved us from a costly mistake.

If you're near our facility, you can order partial pallets through our Goodyear store (plastic sheet pickup, not tire sales) and avoid freight-minimum surprises. If you're not, ask the supplier to quote freight separately and get the lead time in writing. A material price without freight is not a price.

After the scenarios: how to know which one you're in

Go back to the three questions. The answer usually appears:

  • Food contact, high-speed packaging, or heat sealing -> Scenario A.
  • Custom color, texture, or dimension -> Scenario B.
  • Mechanical parts, displays, sign boards, or enclosures -> Scenario C.
  • Either 100 parts or 100,000 parts -> Scenario D.

Don't skip the verification step. I'm not 100% sure how many buyers skip samples, but I know the ones who do tend to have the most urgent requests for replacement material. Also, according to the APR's Design Guide, PETG is generally not considered part of the PET bottle stream. If recyclability matters for your end customer, choose PET instead of PETG.
