I've spent the last four years as a quality inspector at Goodyear, a plastic sheet manufacturer—reviewing roughly 250 production batches a year before they ship. The materials range from PVC and PET to PETG, PS, ABS, and foam board. In Q1 2024, we rejected about 8% of first-production runs for spec deviations. Not because the material was unusable. Because it didn't match what the customer approved.
This checklist is for procurement staff, packaging converters, and print shops that buy plastic sheet and roll in volume. If you're onboarding a new supplier, or you've had deliveries that were "close but not quite right," work through these six steps before you accept the next shipment. The checklist is supplier-agnostic—use it whether you're evaluating Goodyear sheet or any other brand on the market.
Step 1: Verify the Polymer, Not Just the Product Name
"PVC sheet" is not a specification. Neither is "PET sheet." PVC, PET, PETG, PS, and ABS are material families, and each has a range of grades with different plasticizers, additives, and processing behavior. Within PET, you choose between APET and PETG, which behave differently under thermoforming and have different chemical resistance.
At minimum, do this:
- Get the exact grade and product code, not the marketing name.
- Ask for a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA), not the generic one on the supplier's website.
- If the sheet will touch food, confirm the resin meets the relevant FDA regulation. For PET, that's 21 CFR 177.1630. We produce a fair amount of clear PET for thermoformed trays—including seafood trays for shrimp—and the food-contact documentation gets verified on every order.
Even after we qualified a new resin supplier in early 2024, I kept second-guessing the decision. What if their lot-to-lot variability showed up in our sheet? The two months until their first repeat orders confirmed stability were stressful. Verification is good practice. It also protects your sleep.
Step 2: Measure Thickness in Five Places, Not One
Thickness is the most checked property on a plastic sheet spec, and the most botched inspection. Most buyers grab a caliper, check one corner, and call it done. That tells you almost nothing about the roll.
Here's what to do:
- Use a micrometer, not a caliper. Calipers compress thin plastic and give you a false reading.
- Measure five points: four corners plus the center of the sheet, or across the roll width at the start, middle, and end.
- Typical tolerance is ±5% for calendered or extruded sheet. For rolls under 0.25 mm, ±10% is more realistic. If a supplier claims tighter, ask how they verify it.
Why this matters: a 0.4 mm sheet arriving at 0.36 mm might still be "within tolerance" on paper, but it will thermoform thinner at the corners and create weak points in the finished tray. I've seen blister pack producers discover this after 20,000 units were already formed. The batch got redone at the supplier's cost. (Surprise, surprise.)
Step 3: Check Surface Quality Under Raking Light
Die lines, scratches, pinholes, and contamination are easiest to spot when you hold the sheet at a low angle under bright light. Most receiving areas don't have that lighting, so surface defects slip through until the material hits the production floor.
What to check:
- Pull samples from different parts of the bundle, not just the top sheet.
- Inspect both sides. One side tends to pick up more defects depending on the manufacturing process.
- For clear PET and PETG, measure haze if you have access to a haze meter (ASTM D1003). "Looks clear" is subjective; a haze reading is a number you can hold a supplier to.
A "clear" PET roll from one supplier might read 2% haze. From another, 8%. Both manufacturers will call it clear. Put them side by side and they clearly aren't, and your customer will notice.
Step 4: Compare Color and Finish Against an Approved Standard
If you ordered glossy black PVC and the delivery is matte, that's a fast reject. But color drift is subtler. Pigment batch variation, screen changes, and extrusion temperature shifts can move the color just enough to be "close" but not right.
Do this:
- Keep a physical reference from the approved run, not just a digital Pantone value.
- Compare under standardized lighting. A light booth costs a few hundred dollars and eliminates the "looks different in sunlight" argument. (Which, honestly, comes up all the time.)
- Ask the supplier for their color tolerance. ΔE ≤ 1.5 is a common benchmark. If they can't give you a number, they probably aren't measuring it.
I've seen a frosted PVC order arrive at semi-gloss because the matting additive ratio was off. The supplier said it was within industry standard. We rejected the batch anyway, and they re-ran it at their own cost. That's not us being difficult—it's about maintaining consistency for the people who print, form, and package with the material.
Step 5: Check Roll Ends and Packaging Before Unloading
The most boring step, and the one most people skip. It's also where hidden costs quietly pile up.
Before the forklift moves anything:
- Inspect roll ends for crushing or edge damage. Damaged edges cause web breaks during printing or forming.
- Check for moisture under the wrapping. PET absorbs moisture from the air, and elevated moisture creates haze or hydrolysis when the sheet is reheated.
- Confirm the roll is wound with consistent tension. Telescoping or soft rolls are a manufacturing problem, not just a cosmetic one.
A bad roll rejected at the dock is an inconvenience. The same roll discovered after it's been printed, formed, or laminated costs three times as much in downtime and wasted labor. Note to self: we've been meaning to publish the receiving inspection sheet we send to customers—this checklist is essentially that.
Step 6: Insist on Batch Traceability
Every roll or bundle should carry a batch number that ties back to the production date, raw material lots, and quality records. If something fails later, traceability is the difference between isolating three bad rolls and scrapping an entire warehouse.
- Confirm the batch number on the core label matches the packing list. A mismatch is a control failure, even if it's "just a typo."
- Ask how long the supplier retains quality records. I think five years is a reasonable minimum for this industry; some keep less, which would worry me.
- For large orders, request the actual test values for the batch, not just a pass/fail line.
In mid-2024, a 50,000-unit PET order sat at a customer's receiving dock for a week because the batch number on the core label didn't match the packing list. It was a typo. The delay still cost both sides time and money. Traceability sounds like paperwork until the day you actually need it.
Three Things That Trip Up Buyers
1. Applying rubber extrusion tolerances to plastic sheet
Rubber extrusion and plastic sheet extrusion are different processes with different dynamics. If your background is in rubber extrusions, don't assume the same tolerances carry over to PVC or PET sheet. Plastic sheet is generally flatter and more dimensionally stable, but it scratches easier and shows die lines more readily. Different material, different failure modes.
2. Confusing thermoplastic rubber with latex
Is thermoplastic rubber latex? No. TPR is a thermoplastic elastomer blend—it processes like plastic and feels like rubber. Latex is natural rubber latex. The distinction matters for allergen considerations and regulatory documentation in food and medical applications. That said, TPR is not a substitute for PET or PVC sheet in thermoforming. Different category, different job.
3. Choosing on unit price instead of total cost
It took me about four years and roughly 800 batch inspections to understand that consistency beats absolute precision. A sheet that runs 5% off spec on every delivery is easier to plan around than one that's sometimes dead-on and sometimes 12% off. The cheap supplier tends to be the inconsistent one, and inconsistency is where hidden cost lives.
A customer once saved $300 on a roll order by switching to a lower-priced supplier. The roll had inconsistent thickness, which produced forming defects and 30% scrap on their thermoforming line. Lost material and downtime probably cost them $1,800 to $2,200. That $300 savings turned into a roughly $2,000 problem. Don't hold me to the exact figures—this was a few years ago—but the pattern is consistent. My experience covers packaging, print, and industrial sheet applications. If your segment is different, your mileage may vary.
Final Note
Run through these six steps on your next delivery. It takes about 20 minutes per truck, less once you've done it a few times. If a supplier resists any of them, that tells you something useful about how they'll handle a real quality dispute.
