1. Is Goodyear Plastics the same as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company?

No. That's the first thing to clear up. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company makes tires. Goodyear Plastics makes PVC, PETG, ABS, PS, and foam board sheet. Same name, completely different industry. When people search 'goodyear tire & rubber company' or 'goodyear brands,' they usually want tire information. If you searched for tires, this isn't that. (I've literally had someone ask for a 205/55R16 in clear PETG.)

Here's the thing: the goodyear brand in this article refers to a plastic sheet manufacturer, not a tire maker. If you're here because you need vacuum-formable sheet, you're in the right place. If you need all-season tires, keep shopping.

2. What does 'PET' mean in PETG sheet? Is it connected to Pet Releaf?

PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate. It's a polyester commonly used in bottles, food trays, and thermoformable sheet. PETG is a modified version with glycol added, which makes it easier to form and less brittle than straight PET. (The G matters: plain PET sheet can crack during deep draws.)

What about Pet Releaf? No connection. Pet Releaf is a CBD brand for pets. Every so often, a buyer sees 'PET' on a spec sheet and asks if it's safe for dogs. I get the confusion, since PET literally is 'pet' without the rest of the word. But PET sheet is a material, not a pet supplement. We sell PETG sheet for clamshells, blister packs, and displays. 3. How do I mold thermoplastic sheet, and how do I avoid thin corners?

The short-answer version of 'how to mold thermoplastic' is: heat a sheet until it softens, then force it over a mold using vacuum, pressure, or mechanical assistance. Vacuum forming is the most common process for packaging parts and trays. Thermoforming is the broader category that includes vacuum forming, pressure forming, and twin-sheet forming.

For thin corners, here's what I've learned from watching our tooling trials: don't blame the mold first. Usually the problem is uneven heating. If the center is hotter than the edges, the material draws from the thinnest zone and you get corner thinning. Pre-stretch the sheet into a bubble before vacuum, use a plug assist on deep draws, and make sure your mold has draft angles. In my experience, most 'mold design' problems are actually heating problems.

  • PVC sheet is a workhorse. It forms well, has good chemical resistance, and is commonly used for industrial trays and packaging. It's usually the most cost-effective option if you don't need high clarity.
  • PETG sheet is clearer and tougher than PVC. If you need retail-grade clarity, food-contact options, or a material that won't crack easily, PETG is often the safer bet.
  • ABS sheet is stiffer and impact-resistant. It's a reasonable choice for automotive, electronic enclosures, and parts that need to take a beating.
  • PS sheet is economical and easy to thermoform, but it's more brittle. It's fine for disposable packaging and foam board, not for structural parts.

To be fair, I've seen PVC do amazing things, and I've seen PETG fail when the part required high heat resistance. 'Better' is a function of the part, the environment, and your budget. If you're on the edge, order small trials from a supplier, or better, ask for technical data sheets before you commit to a roll.

5. Can you match Pantone colors on custom sheet orders?

Yes, as a custom color sheet manufacturer, we can match colors, but I have to manage expectations. Color matching isn't a magic trick; it's a measurement. The industry standard for color tolerance is Delta E under 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E between 2 and 4 is noticeable to a trained eye, and above 4 it's visible to most people. If a supplier says 'we can match Pantone 286 C perfectly,' ask what Delta E they're using. That single question will tell you a lot.

Keep in mind that the same Pantone color can look different on a glossy PETG sheet versus a matte ABS sheet. The substrate, brightness, and surface texture all affect the final appearance. Before you approve a color, run a sample on the exact material and thickness you intend to buy. (A sample that arrives late is annoying, but a full order in the wrong color is a disaster.)

6. Do you sell Festo air hose or pneumatic fittings?

This is one of those areas where an honest 'we need to verify' is better than a marketing slogan. 8. How should I compare quotes from plastic sheet suppliers?

Let's talk total cost, not unit price. In 2023, I compared quotes from four PVC sheet vendors. One distributor quoted 6% below our existing supplier. The upside was obvious. The risk was that their thickness tolerance was wider than our thermoformer liked, and they added fees for roll labels and a credit check. I kept asking myself: is 6% worth potential downtime? The answer was no after I calculated the TCO. By the time scrap, extra shipping, and the fees were included, the 'cheap' quote was about 4% more expensive.
