If you're choosing a supplier based on unit price, you're not saving money. You're just deferring it. I didn't learn that from a spreadsheet. I learned it from a Supreme Court case, a bad air hose measurement, and a silicone mold release that almost ruined a food-packaging run.

A 1/4-inch hose looks almost identical to a 3/8-inch hose in a photo, but the difference in airflow and pressure drop can ruin your setup. I have mixed feelings about rush fees, by the way. Part of me thinks they're a racket. The other part knows what happens inside a plant when you bump a line—overtime, rescheduling, mistakes. The fee is compensation for that chaos. Whether it's worth paying depends entirely on the cost of the alternative.
Total cost is the only score that counts
So here's my standing opinion: stop comparing unit prices first. Start with total cost. Add up the product, the shipping, the setup, the fit, the risk, and the hours you'll spend catching mistakes. Then compare.
I've handled over 200 rush orders in the last six years, and the expensive ones all share the same flaw: someone saved money on the front end and paid double on the back end. The order that arrived on time with a verified spec sheet, a clear color tolerance, and a realistic delivery date was always cheaper in the end. Even if the unit price wasn't the lowest.
That's it. Not a complicated formula. Just a habit of asking, before you buy: what does this really cost if the first version fails? Because in my world—and probably in yours too—waiting to ask that question is the most expensive mistake you can make.
