If you're waiting on a downed machine and someone starts a lecture about nitrile vs rubber, stop them. The emergency isn't a materials seminar. It's a replacement problem. And the people who solve those fastest don't argue about which elastomer is "better." They find the original spec, then work backward.
Here's the short version: nitrile rubber (NBR) is the go-to for oil resistance. Generic "rubber" can mean natural rubber, SBR, EPDM, neoprene, or any of a dozen other compounds. If you're replacing a hydraulic hose, the name on the side of the hose matters more than the chemical family.
I coordinate emergency material requests for a polymer company. Most of my day is triaging calls where someone has a deadline measured in hours, not weeks.
