I'm the office administrator who handles purchasing for a custom packaging manufacturer. That means I'm the one ordering plastic sheet materials, chasing delivery dates, and explaining to our operations manager why the material that looked fine on paper cracked in the warehouse. After five years and roughly sixty orders a year, I've learned one thing: there is no “best” plastic sheet. There's only the best fit for your specific setup.
Before I get into the scenarios, let me define what I mean by Goodyear brands. Goodyear doesn't just make one type of sheet. The line includes PET, PETG, PVC, PS, ABS, and foam board. Each acts differently under heat, impact, moisture, and chemical exposure. So when a sales rep tries to give you a simple answer—“just use PET”—that's a red flag.
Why the “Best Material” Question Is the Wrong Question
I used to ask suppliers “what's the best material?” and got confident answers. I also got failures. The questions that matter are: What will the sheet touch? What temperature? What stress? Will it be printed, folded, thermoformed, or bonded? How long does it need to last?
In our shop, we deal with four main scenarios. I'll walk through each one.
Scenario 1: You Need Clarity and a Clean Surface
If your product needs a clear window, retail packaging, or a printed layer behind the sheet, PET thermoplastic is the one we reach for most often. PET—polyethylene terephthalate—is a thermoplastic with excellent clarity and good dimensional stability. In the Goodyear store, it comes in clear, white, black, and a range of colors, in rolls or sheets. We use it for blister packs and display cartons.
This is also where I made my rookie mistake. In my first year, I approved a PET order based on how a small sample looked on my desk. It looked great. But in our unheated storage area, those clear trays cracked when we stacked them during the winter. The clarity was right; the impact resistance wasn't. That reorder cost us about $700 and a very annoyed production supervisor.
One note: plain PET can be a little stiff when you try to fold it sharply. If you need deep thermoforming, PETG (the glycol-modified version) is easier to form and less likely to stress-crack. Both are PET-based thermoplastics, but they're not the same product. Goodyear has both, and I've ordered both thinking they were interchangeable—that's a communication mistake I won't make again. We said “PET” and they delivered PET, but what we really needed was PETG for that particular tool. Same material family, different behavior.
Scenario 2: You Need Toughness, Not Just Clarity
For anything that will be handled repeatedly, stacked in a cold warehouse, or protecting a heavier component, ABS sheet is usually a better fit than PET. ABS is stronger, stiffer, and more impact-resistant overall. We learned this the hard way when we specified clear PET for a tote insert. In our unheated storage area, the inserts cracked after two weeks. ABS solved the problem, even though we had to give up transparency.
The most frustrating part of that mistake wasn't the cost—it was that the datasheet made sense on paper. PET reported good strength. The datasheet didn't tell us how it would behave in a real warehouse at 5°C. That's why I now test samples under actual conditions instead of trusting a number in a PDF.
Scenario 3: You Need Cost-Effective Sheet for Internal or Short-Term Use
If the part is a temporary fixture, a cutting board template, or a packaging insert that isn't exposed to harsh conditions, PVC or PS sheet often does the job for less. PVC is forgiving and easy to fabricate. PS is stiffer and cheaper, but brittle. Honestly, if you're not sure, this is the zone where a supplier's advice matters. A good rep will say “PS is fine for this, but if the part will hit the floor, use PVC.” We've seen both.
At the same time, “cheap” is relative. We once bought a lower-grade PVC sheet based on price alone. It worked for a while, then yellowed unevenly in the light. Now I factor in expected service life. A few cents per kilo can look like a savings until you redo the job.
Scenario 4: You Need a Lightweight Rigid Board
For signage, display backing, or lightweight structural panels, PVC foam board is a solid choice. It's much lighter than solid sheet, machines well, and holds print decently. This is a separate product from thin PVC roll stock, and another example of why the material family isn't enough—you also need to know the product form.
How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
Here's the practical checklist I use before ordering:
- Temperature: Will the sheet live in a warm or cold environment? ABS and PVC handle a wider range than PS.
- Impact: Does it need to survive drops, stacking, or vibration?
- Chemical exposure: Oils, solvents, adhesives? PET can stress-crack around certain chemicals; PVC and PS react differently.
- Fabrication: Are you cutting, bending, forming, gluing, or printing? Each material behaves differently.
- Regulatory or contact: Food contact, medical, or toys? That requires relevant compliance data.
If you can't answer these, order samples from the Goodyear store and test them through your actual process. That's the only way to decide that I trust now.
The Boundary Lesson That Changed How I Evaluate Suppliers
This is the part I didn't expect to care about when I took over purchasing. One afternoon, our maintenance manager asked me how to measure hydraulic hose fittings. He needed a replacement for a compressed air line. My first instinct was to email the plastic sheet supplier. But that's not their product. An air hose reducer, a hydraulic fitting, and a plastic sheet are completely different categories. The Goodyear rep didn't pretend to know. She said, “That's outside what we make. You want a hydraulic hose supplier.”
That answer made me trust her more than any “we can do everything” pitch ever did. Some vendors add unrelated products to their catalog just to grow sales. But the ones who are honest about their expertise are the ones who actually deliver on the main product.
The same logic applies to materials. No single plastic sheet is the right answer for every job. A manufacturer that says “we can make any sheet for any application” is probably not being precise about the trade-offs. A good specialized sheet manufacturer will tell you when a different material or product form will work better.
Putting It Together
So, what's the universal answer? There isn't one. The closest thing is this:
Start with Goodyear's product range, because the breadth is real. But don't choose the material until you've asked yourself the questions above. If you're still unsure, order a few samples from the Goodyear store and run them through your actual conditions. And when you talk to your supplier, tell them exactly what the sheet needs to survive. The more specific you are, the better their recommendation will be.
What worked for our setup might not work for yours. That's not just a disclaimer; it's part of the decision process. In our case, the PET failure happened because our warehouse isn't climate-controlled. If your facility stays around 20°C, the same sheet might be perfectly fine.
And if you're evaluating a vendor who's eager to explain how to measure hydraulic hose fittings on the side, be careful. That may sound harsh, but in procurement, focus is a feature.
