Goodyear Plastic Sheets: A Procurement Manager's FAQ on Mold Making, PET Orphans, and More

Before you request a quote from Goodyear, here are the questions I get asked most as a procurement manager. I've spent six years buying plastic sheet at a contract packaging company—roughly $180,000 of cumulative spend, spread over maybe 200 orders. Maybe 180, I'd have to check. My experience is mostly with PETG, PVC, and ABS for boxes, trays, and binding covers. If you're in a different segment, like chocolate mold production, your material requirements are going to be different.

1. Are you the Goodyear tire company?

No. We're a plastic sheet manufacturer, not a tire maker. We produce PVC, PET, PETG, PS, and ABS sheet/roll, plus PVC foam board, blister film, and binding cover. The name overlap confuses people, which is fair. Once you get past the name, the buying conversation is usually about gauge, gloss, color, and tolerance.

2. Can I use Goodyear sheets for chocolate molds? I keep seeing 'molds chocolate polycarbonate.'

When someone searches 'molds chocolate polycarbonate' they're usually looking for polycarbonate chocolate molds, and that's a different product. Polycarbonate is the standard for chocolate molds because it's food-grade, transparent, and holds up to temperature cycling. We don't make polycarbonate sheet. We make PETG, which is sometimes used in food packaging, but not for thermoformed chocolate cavities. If you're buying chocolate molds, specify food-grade polycarbonate. A wrong sheet is a $1,200 redo in waiting.

3. How to make molds for resin using your plastic sheets?

Basically, use our PETG or PVC sheets as mold boxes, not as the mold cavity itself. A workable approach:

  1. Cut four pieces of PETG or PVC sheet for the side walls.
  2. Set them on a flat surface in a rectangle and seal the seams with hot glue or silicone.
  3. Place your master inside, spray with a release agent, and pour mixed silicone over it.
  4. Allow cure, remove the master, and you have a silicone mold ready for resin.

For simple flat castings, the same sheet can form the bottom of the mold. I went back and forth between PETG and PVC for one project: PVC is cheaper and easier to glue, but PETG is tougher and clearer. I went with PETG because I wanted to see bubbles before curing. It cost maybe 30% more, and it cut my failure rate. Actually, that trade-off isn't universal—if you're making a rough concrete form, PVC is fine. For a finished part, surface quality is your brand. If the mold wall has scratches, the casting will tell everyone. That's why I don't cut corners on the mold box material even when the resin is inexpensive.

4. Can your sheets be used for mold remediation Goodyear containment?

If you searched 'mold remediation Goodyear' and got here, you're probably looking for a local mold removal service, not a plastic sheet supplier. Different mold. That said, contractors do call us. For room containment during remediation, flexible polyethylene sheeting is the vapor barrier you want. We don't make that. We make rigid sheets and foam board. Rigid PVC or PETG panels are good for access doors, chutes, and cleanable work surfaces. White PVC foam board cuts easily, resists moisture, and can be wiped down. Just don't substitute it for a vapor barrier. Use the right tool.

5. What are PET orphans? Can I buy them from Goodyear?

PET 'orphans' are leftover PET or PETG sheet lots from canceled orders, overruns, or discontinued colors. They sit in the warehouse like matching socks nobody paired. From a cost-control perspective, they're attractive: they exist, so lead time is short, and they're often priced to recover material cost. But you have to verify resin grade, gauge, width, and color. We keep the original PMS chip when we can. Ask for a sample before you commit to 20 rolls. Actually, the biggest mistake I ever made was buying orphan stock without checking the width. It wasn't the right width for my die, and I paid to have it slit. That ate up the discount. Also, orphans can be a quick source for custom-branded work if your customer is okay with a color match from a previous job. If you need a tight match across multiple batches, start from virgin resin with a confirmed recipe. The sample is non-negotiable.

6. How do custom colors and thickness change the total cost?

This is where budgets go to die. I always ask for the exact Pantone number, thickness tolerance, and minimum quantity. People think expensive suppliers charge more because they can. The reality is the reverse: suppliers who invest in color control can charge more because they deliver batches that don't need to be redone. In Q2 2024 I compared two quotes for custom clear PETG. One came in at $6,800; the other at $7,450. The lower quote didn't include color development or surface masking, so the true total was $8,100. The higher quote was all-in. That's a 17% difference hidden in fine print. Bottom line: use a total cost spreadsheet, not a per-pound price.

MOQ is part of TCO. A low per-sheet price with a 500-sheet minimum can inflate your inventory cost if you only need 200 sheets. My procurement rule: compare quotes on delivered cost per usable sheet after scrap and setup, not on the headline unit price. For color-critical work, the standard tolerance is Delta E under 2, based on Pantone guidelines. We measure every batch with a spectrophotometer and keep records. That doesn't make us 'premium' every time—it just means we know where our cost structure sits.

7. Is your 'recyclable' claim real or greenwashing?

Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), a claim like 'recyclable' has to be substantiated. If a product is only recyclable in certain programs, saying 'recyclable' without qualification can be misleading. So we're specific: PETG is technically recyclable in commercial streams where accepted, but it is not universal curbside. PVC has a different recycling path and is rarely in curbside programs. When you buy from us, each material carries its identification code and disposal notes. That specificity protects your customer relationships and it protects you from an FTC complaint.

From a brand image standpoint, a sustainability claim you can defend is an asset. A vague claim is a liability. I've rejected suppliers who couldn't tell me the recycling stream for their material.

8. Can I get samples without a hassle?

Yes. We ship flat 8.5 x 11 sample sheets. If you only need a reference sheet, USPS pricing as of January 2025 is $0.73 for a First-Class letter up to 1 oz, and $1.50 for a large envelope up to 1 oz. A few plastic sheets will weigh more, so actual postage depends on weight. I learned the hard way that 'free samples' aren't always free—one vendor charged $25 handling and shipped it rolled in a tube. I'd rather pay real postage and get flat sheets. Samples are pretty cheap compared to a $1,200 redo.

When you get the sample, bend it, test solvent adhesion, check clarity. A photo won't tell you about surface finish. We keep sample sheets of every color and gauge we stock. That part of the process shouldn't cost you a project.
